Building Community Through Collage at One Wingate East Independent Living

Takeaways:

Community building: A Cut Loose Collage Workshop helped new residents at an independent living facility unwind, create, and connect.

Functional art: Participants created practical, personal items like bookmarks, thank-you cards, and wall art.

Ongoing inspiration: The low-stakes session sparked enthusiasm for future projects, with residents collecting scraps and discussing a potential regular collage club.

Yesterday, I hosted a Craft & Connect Cut Loose Collage Workshop at One Wingate East, a brand-new independent living facility in Needham, Massachusetts.

Because the facility is just getting started, only a handful of residents have moved in so far. The program director and I wanted to create an activity that felt low-stakes and welcoming, something that would give residents a chance to unwind, be creative, and get to know each other.

For many of the participants, it was their first time trying collage. But within minutes, everyone dove deep into their projects.

Here is what stood out from the session:

  • Low-pressure ice-breaker: Friendly chatter started immediately. “I can’t wait to see what we’re gonna make!” “What floor are you on?” “I’m going to make a thank-you card!” Residents started talking about their lives while sharing materials. “I’m making a bookmark with cute dogs for my friend.” “Oh, here’s a picture of a cute dog! Use it!” Getting to know new people seemed easy when everyone was playing, laughing, and sharing.

  • Purpose-driven art: Participants weren’t just passing the time. They created pieces with clear uses in mind: thank-you cards, bookmarks, apartment wall art, and thoughtful gifts for family members.
  • Sparking ongoing creativity: Once everyone realized that any paper material is fair game for collage, the ideas took off. People started planning whole series of note cards and bookmarks, and a few residents even collected extra scraps for future collage projects.

It was wonderful to see a brand-new community form connections so quickly through simple creativity. Fingers crossed that a regular collage club will take off at One Wingate East.
